Types of IELTS

There are two types of IELTS tests — Academic and General Training. NCC Global provides training for both these IELTS examinations. IELTS Academic can be taken in a test centre on paper, on the computer, and now also online from home or another private location that has a stable internet connection. Further, the IELTS General Training can only be taken in an authorised IELTS test centre on paper or on a computer. NCC’s training batches are designed as per the test requirements and ensure to abide by the core IELTS features.

IELTS Features

  • For Academic and General Training, there are the same Listening and Speaking tests but different Reading and Writing tests.
  • The conducted Listening, Reading, and Writing sections of IELTS tests in a day are completed on the same day, without any in-between breaks.
  • The Speaking section of the IELTS test may be scheduled up to a week before or after the other tests. In the case of IELTS Online, the Speaking test is scheduled before other tests.
  • The total IELTS test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
  • The test includes 40 questions each in the Listening and Reading tests, along with 2 tasks in Writing and 3 parts in Reading.

Sectional Analysis

IELTS Listening: 30 minutes

This section includes listening to four recordings of native English speakers and then writing answers to a series of questions. The type of recordings are:

  • Recording 1:A conversation between two people that is set in a daily social context.
  • Recording 2:A monologue set in a daily social context, like a speech.
  • Recording 3:A conversation among up to four individuals set in an educational/ training context like a university tutor and a class student discussing a particular assignment/topic/or chapter.
  • Recording 4:A monologue on an academic/ course subject like a university lecture.

In this, the assessors will be looking for evidence of the candidate’s ability to understand and interpret the main ideas and details of the given information, the opinions, the attitude of the speakers, the purpose of their utterance, and evidence of the candidate’s ability to follow the sequence/development of ideas. All these recordings will include 10 questions each.

IELTS Reading: 60 minutes

The Reading section includes a total of 40 questions designed to test a range of English language reading skills. These include the evaluation of reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical arguments, and recognising the writer’s opinions, attitudes, and purpose.

It includes three long texts, which cover from descriptive and factual in context to discursive and analytical. These can be taken from books, journals, magazines, or newspapers. The three reading passages with distinct questions using various task types need to be solved by the candidate.

This includes 40 questions which can be—multiple choice, identifying information, identifying the writer’s views/claims, matching information, matching headings, matching features, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, diagram label completion, and short-answer questions. • Task 2:Here, the test-taker is asked to write an essay responding to the point of view, argument, or problem. Please note that the responses to both tasks must be in a formal style only.

IELTS Speaking: 11-14 minutes

The speaking section in IELTS assesses a student’s use of spoken English. Every test is recorded for further evaluation. This includes three parts.

  • Part 1:Here, the examiner will ask general questions about the candidate’s personality along with a range of familiar topics, including home, family, work, studies, cocurricular, and interests. This part is for a duration between four and five minutes.
  • Part 2:In this, the test taker will be given a card that will ask them to talk about a particular topic like rivers in china, markets of Asia, etc. They will be given one minute to prepare before speaking for a duration of two minutes. The examiner can further ask one or two questions on the same topic.
  • Part 3:Here, the test taker will be asked more questions about the topic in Part 2. This section will give them the opportunity to discuss more abstract ideas, thoughts, and issues. This part of the test is for a duration between four and five minutes.

By the end of the IELTS course, the candidates at NCC Global become fully aware of all the sections and how to complete questions in the given time.
